Hi, I am Cairan, a building physicist and Chartered engineer. I am currently working at UCL as a research fellow. Below is a summary of my education, qualifications and work experience.
Education
PhD in Building physics at University College London.
2019 to 2024
Master of Research at University College London.
2018 – 2019
BEng(Hons) in Building Services Engineering at Coventry University.
2008-2011
Experience
Research Fellow
University College London (UCL)
2024 to current
Research fellow in the UCL Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering (IEDE).
The research I am involved with examines the impact of various retrofit and decarbonisation interventions to the UK housing stock using the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero’s (DESNZ) National Building Model (NBM) integrated with University College London’s (UCL) Health Impact of Domestic Energy Efficiency Measures (HIDEEM) model, collectively known as NBM-Health. NBM-Health is employed to evaluate the impacts of these interventions on occupants’ exposure to radon, mould, particulate matter, and extreme indoor temperatures. The impacts of interventions are further quantified by estimating their cost, changes in energy consumption, carbon emissions, quality-adjusted life years (QALYs), and costs to the National Health Service (NHS).
I am responsible for conducting rapid evidence assessments, updates and upgrades to the model in Python.
